🪄 Setup Guide

Once Plug: Cash on Delivery is installed, there are five things to configure before Cash on Delivery is fully live at checkout. This guide walks through each one in order — the same five steps shown in the setup checklist on your app dashboard.

You don't have to do this all in one sitting. The checklist on your dashboard tracks your progress automatically and picks up right where you left off.

1. Add a Cash on Delivery payment method​

Before the app can control anything, Shopify needs a payment method it can recognize as "Cash on Delivery."

  1. In your Shopify Admin, go to Settings → Payments.
  2. Under Manual payment methods, click Add manual payment method.
  3. Choose Create custom payment method, name it something clear like Cash on Delivery, and save.

The app matches this payment method by name in the next step, so keep the name simple and don't rename it later without updating your COD Limit settings too.

2. Add a Cash on Delivery shipping rate​

If you plan to charge a COD fee (step 5) or want a distinct shipping option for COD orders, add a shipping rate for it now.

  1. Go to Settings → Shipping and delivery.
  2. Open the shipping zone your customers order from and click Add rate.
  3. Name it clearly — for example Cash on Delivery, COD – Standard, or COD – Express — so it's easy to pick out later.

This step is optional if you don't need a COD-specific shipping rate or fee — you can skip straight to step 3.

3. Turn on COD Limit and select your payment method​

This is where you tell the app which Shopify payment method is Cash on Delivery, and set any restrictions you need.

  1. Open the app and go to Limit COD.
  2. Turn the Status toggle on.
  3. Under Payment Method, select the Cash on Delivery method you created in step 1.
  4. Configure any restrictions you need (order total, location, products, customer tags, and so on) — see the full Limit COD guide for details on every option.

4. Keep delivery options in sync (optional)​

When a COD restriction hides the Cash on Delivery payment method, the matching delivery/shipping option can still show up at checkout unless you link them together.

  1. Still on the Limit COD page, find Keep Delivery Options in Sync.
  2. Enable Also hide the matching delivery option when Cash on Delivery is hidden.
  3. Select the delivery/shipping option(s) that represent COD — for example the rate you created in step 2.
tip

If you don't offer a separate COD shipping rate, or you're comfortable with customers still seeing that delivery option even when COD payment is hidden, you can mark this step done without enabling it.

5. Add a Cash on Delivery fee (optional)​

If you want to charge a fixed amount or a percentage for orders paid with Cash on Delivery, set that up in Fee Settings.

  1. Open the app and go to Fee Settings.
  2. Choose Static Fee (tied to a shipping rate, available on every plan) or Dynamic Fee (calculated live at checkout, requires the Pro plan or higher).
  3. Fill in the fee amount and save.

✅ You're done​

Once the three required steps (1–3) are complete, Cash on Delivery is live at checkout and the setup checklist on your dashboard will show Setup complete. Steps 4 and 5 are optional — enable them whenever they fit your store.
